Why religion fails

Image
I think I have identified partially why religion fails for so many people. I will try to get the whole train of thought in. Hopefully by the time I get to the end, it will make sense. The ideal goal of religion is to bring people to awareness of the Creator. Religion is not the equivalent of spiritual truth. Religion is composed of a group of people who engage in certain patterns of behavior and speech. The patterns of religious doctrines and practices are like a path that has the capacity to lead us to the Creator. But it is the Creator who directly teaches us spiritual truth. Spiritual truth can not be received, communicated, or comprehended in any other way, except by the Creator. People may find the social and organizational aspect of religion to be detrimental or beneficial. They may find the words spoken in religion to be beautiful or reprehensible. This dissonance is the result of humans trying to reflect God and spiritual truth through their own humanity. Religion ...

The relationship between Science and Religion

Image
Sometimes I see people comparing “science” to “theology”. As if it is one or the other. I think that this occurs because many theological theistic theories are not consistent with the most likely conclusions drawn from evidences in other fields of study which have been evaluated using the scientific method. Also I think this occurs because frequently the scientific method is not applied to the field of theology. In this way, many have created a dualism between “science” and “theology”. To get the record straight-- speaking for myself alone, I would like to share my perspective on this subject. “Science” encompasses information gathered using the scientific method to collect, analyze and make theories about evidences. These theories have been classified into fields of study including subjects like chemistry, physics, archaeology, medicine, history, psychology, and biology. Among these fields is “theology”. Theology means “the study of the nature of God and religious ...

Why is religion so similar and so different?

I believe that God has revealed himself to countless individuals over the millenia. I personally theorize, that it is highly likely that God has enlightened people in nearly every century and every culture throughout the antiquity of the human race. There is a pattern that can be observed. When God enlightens an individual, the individual often attempts to share what He or she has learned about God with others. (I am sure that they make some or many mistakes in their attempted explanations of their near-to indescribable experiences). Then people hear the words of the enlightened individuals and often misunderstand aspects of what was taught. The teaching becomes a bit twisted almost immediately. After a hundred years or so, it is VERY twisted and by the time 300 years pass, it is so messed up and confused that it is sometimes hardly recognizable to what the original enlightened person meant. This pattern has a name: Apostasy (a general falling away from the truth). It is conceivab...

"If God does not make Himself known to me, then He does not exist?"

First of all, before I go in to all of the reasons that this is not sound logic, I first want to say that God has already made himself known to you.  How do you think you know about him in the first place?  There are hundreds of recorded instances in the scriptures of God making Himself "known".  Now you can reject the fact that He has already "made Himself known"-- You can reject the testimonies and histories given of every prophet from Adam to Malachi and write them all of as liars or insane.  You can reject the witness and history given of Jesus Christ and call him a fraud and a liar a long with the multitudes who followed Him and witnessed His miracles first hand. You can reject the witnesses given of Paul, Peter, John, Matthew, James, and Luke who traveled with Him through it all among many hundreds to thousands of others.  You can reject the testimonies given in the Book of Mormon from Lehi down to Moroni and just categorize the B...
