Is the tree worth it?

Image
There once was a very old woman who had a peach tree in her backyard. The peaches were the most delicious peaches in the universe. She had spent her entire life sitting in the shade of her tree eating delicious peaches. Every day she would water her tree and check for weeds. She wanted to share her peach tree with other people before she died. She went to each of her neighbors and gave them a peach seed. She told her neighbors that the fruit of the peach tree was the greatest in the universe. The Carsons tossed the seed out in the street because they didn't trust the old lady. The Masons were in a hurry, so they didn't spend time finding a very good spot to plant the seed. The Blackers found a really spot of ground to plant it in right next to their blackberry bush. The Robinsons also found a really good spot to plant it in. Years passed. The Carsons seed never grew out in the street. It got run over by cars until it was smashed into pieces. The Masons s...

Joseph: Con-artist, Insane, or Prophet?

Image
Con-Artist: If a con-artist, then we need to understand the extent of his skill. Here are just a few of his accomplishments. He began to be a con-artist at age 14 when he claimed to see God. He was such a skilled con-artist (at 14), that he was able to deceive even his parents and siblings, who had observed his character and behavior since birth....  Unless they were ALL con-artists?  Like a con-artist family that never dropped their the ball on their con-artistry... sort of like a family of spies that lived their entire life undercover till death. Okay, so maybe it is too much of a stretch for you to believe that he was a master con-artist from age 14 and was able to trick his family for their entire lives. Insane: Well, if not a con-artist, then perhaps insane? When he told his Dad that he had seen God in a vision, maybe his father and the rest of the family believed him because they could truly sense that Joseph himself believed eve...

Why is there so much suffering?

Image
Why is there so much suffering? A Religious answer: It is a direct consequence of someone’s actions (or the actions of many) and for God to alter the consequences of that action would be effectually removing agency because by removing the consequence of their action you make the action nullified, which is a form of taking away agency. God typically does not remove agency. In religion, much of the suffering that occurs is attributed as the result of a something someone did a long time ago (Adam), which is referred to as “the fall of man”, but no one fully understands what this means, but many of the problems on earth are attributed to it by many religious people.

Are spiritual experiences real?

Image
Some think all Spiritual experiences are “brain hiccups”; I try to be open to this idea. Brain imaging shows where spiritual experiences are interpreted in the brain. Brain imaging also shows where physical experiences are interpreted in the brain. Potentially spiritual experiences could be replicated with brain stimulation. Physical experiences can already be replicated with brain stimulation… So the ability to replicate an experience with brain stimulation means nothing about the reality of the experience itself. I have had spiritual experiences and I do not think they are “hiccups”… But anything is possible… you could be a brain in a glass for I all know… A scenario could exist where spiritual experiences could be proven to be from God— however, a scenario cannot exist where spiritual experiences could be proven as not from God. I know of no one who has had them (as I have) who thinks they are still brain hiccups. Spiritual experiences are the most wonderful experiences in life, ...
