Love is love

Image
Love is love... or is it really more complicated than that? In its more general sense "love" is "caring" for or about someone/someplace/something. It can be applied to basically anything, anywhere or anyone. If changes occur in regards to this person/place/thing and these changes cause emotional effects on us, then we may "love" them/that/it. But is this really an adequate description?  No, it isn't. The English language has the word "love" to describe something that in fact is multiple "somethings" and not one thing at all.  What do these different kinds of love feel like-- and what do they do? I know that these different kinds of love are distinct, because I have felt each one in isolation as well as in combination with each other. Child-like (dependent) love:  The first kind of love that I can recall is feeling cared for and taken care of. It was from my parents and siblings. I didn't feel much gratitu...

The difference between wishful thinking and truth

Image
What is the difference between truth and wishful thinking and truth? It is the same difference that exists between pessimistic thinking and truth. Whether we want or don’t want something to be true or not has no bearing on its actual truthfulness. Some people are depressed and believe that no one really loves them, even when they have many friends and family members who express repeatedly their undying love and spend large amounts of time trying to cheer them up. Other people have narcissism and believe that they are the best at everything and that everyone is jealous of them, when in reality most people can’t stand their company and even tell them that to their face repeatedly. Whether you are wishful of something or pessimistic about something does not mean that it is the truth. Some fields of study contain theories which are supported by evidence that is very easy to analyze and assess because the evidence is directly observable. Other fields of study contain theories w...

Failed attempts.

Someone said: I have asked God if he really exists--in humility. There was no answer in response from anything outside of myself. It's convenient that this supposed experience can't be detected by anyone else and therefore could be completely made up. If you could share my personal experience, you would know that there is no God. Why is your experience more valid than mine? Here is a response: I have a good friend who told me that he tried exercising and it didnt work. He didnt lose any weight and he didnt get any muscle and he didnt feel any better. He told me that he actually felt much worse. I am not doubting his claims, but since his results were so vastly different from the multitudes of others I have spoken with and also from my own experiences, I had concerns regarding small but important details of the exercise attempts that may be undermining his attempts. I suspect a similar event or factor may be involved with your attempts, but it would take some investigating ...

Real and pseudo

Someone said: The scriptures and modern prophets have given a recipe for gaining a testimony. I taught it on my mission, and I can testify that it actually works, pretty reliably. You start by hoping that something is true. Then you nurture that hope, and faith grows over time. Eventually you feel powerful, intensely personal, feelings that this thing is true. It does work. The only downside is that these steps can help you believe in something, yes, but they don't do anything regarding whether or not that thing is objectively real. One person can get a witness of the Holy Ghost that infant baptism is a sacred ordinance, approved of by God. Another can have those same feelings, but for the opposite thing, that infant baptism is an abomination, that God detests the practice. Here is a response: I have spent quite a bit of time experimenting with and also conversing with others claims in regards to this experiment/concept. Let me make a quick comparison before I make my point...

Is inability to disprove a reason to believe?

Someone said: "we can't prove that elves don't exist either. The only logical thing is to assume they do. Yes, God exists. And so to elves... And dragons. We can't prove they don't exist, therefore they must exist." Here is a response: are you proposing that there is evidence that suggests the existence of elves etc? Are you proposing that the evidence for elves etc. is in someway comparable to the evidence for a Creator? I have not observed that billions of people on every continent thru all of human history have claimed to interact with elves. Is there some other evidence for elves etc. that I have not encountered that somehow makes this in an way, even remotely comparable for the evidence for a Creator? If so, please expose me to this evidence or claims of such interactions. Being unable to disprove something is not sufficient to conclude that it is reasonable to believe in it. There has to be substantial evidence or people claiming interaction and...

Does the Creator use a magic wand?

Image
This posts significance in relation to atheism or theism only depends on whether or not you have already come to the conclusion that the Divine operates by snapping their fingers or waving around a magic wand or something, as opposed to using methods that utilize the laws that the Creator likely designed. It would be somewhat ridiculous to me for the Creator to make a whole bunch laws (the laws of physics etc.) and then break them all to do things. If you weren't working under thr premise that the Creator breaks laws that the Creator likely made, or weren't working under the premise that the creator made things with a magic wand or whatever, then the post could be restated thusly: "We used to think that the Creator operated outside of consistent laws and observable methods, but now it is evident that the Creator utilizes these things rather than working around them." Or "We used to think that the Creator operated manually, now it appears that the designs o...

Cockroach in my icecream

Image
“If there is a cockroach in your ice cream, then all of the ice cream is garbage” What about the changes in the church? What about racism and sexism? What about the older policies? What if a church leader sinned or taught something wrong? Does this mean that the church isn’t true? A good tree brings forth good fruit. If the tree brings forth evil fruit, then the tree is evil. Therefore, if a church leader ever sinned, or taught something or supported a policy that wasn’t good and right—this means that the whole church is evil, right? Matthew 7: 16-20 states the following: 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by th...
